Love how this Alaskan house responds with elegance and sensitivity to its environment - from the limited building footprint (the house is cantilevered from a small basement), the balance of large and small spaces for heat control, the careful capture of year-round sunlight, as well as solar-panels for heating / water and the robustness of the metal exterior to deal with the harsh winter climate combined with a soft, tactile interior - a nest for the family.

A beautiful hillside house on the Chilean coast, constructed entirely from local timber with 3 sides almost solid for shading from sun & wind, whilst the other side is glazed to capture natural light and amazing views over the surrounding beach and wetlands. Clearly a labour of love - the interior, even the kitchen and furniture, is built in timber to create a seamless natural look.

This beach house in Queensland has lots of steal-able design ideas, including a daybed / bed in the smallest bedroom for more flexible use and the open plan kitchen and dining area combining simple clean white surfaces with the warmth of wood.

Love the use of a simple material like plywood in the interior of this ‘cabin’ located on a flood plain in Washington State and the hand-cranked sliding steel shutters which close up the exterior when it’s not in use..
